About Nerds Rope

Nerds Rope is a Follow the Leader game from The Willy Wonka Candy Company, released in 2001. You steer a rope of Nerds through a candy maze, and the rope grows as you eat the candy.

Each level has a goal of Nerds. Once the rope is long enough, the elevator opens, and you reach it to finish the level. The original movie has 20 levels.

Browsers can no longer play the original Shockwave movie, so this page runs a rebuild of it: the game's own Lingo scripts, translated to run in your browser, with its original artwork and sounds.

How to play

  • Click anywhere on the title screen to start a new game.
  • Press an arrow key to start each level, then steer the rope with the arrow keys or W A S D.
  • Eat the candy to grow the rope. The NERDS Needed box shows how many the level still needs.
  • Run into a wall or into your own rope and you lose a life.
  • Press P to pause. When the last life is gone, the Game Over screen appears. A click returns you to the title screen.

Controls

  • Arrow keys or W A S D: steer the rope
  • Mouse: the title screen and the Restart and Quit buttons
  • P: pause

On a touch screen, arrow buttons appear under the game.

How this version was made

The original is a Macromedia Director movie from 2001, from The Willy Wonka Candy Company. Director's Shockwave plug-in no longer runs in current browsers, so this site rebuilds the movie rather than running the plug-in.

The movie's Lingo scripts were translated into code a browser runs. A small player draws the original 450 by 400 pixel stage with the game's own artwork and its 31 sounds.

The game files come from the copy kept at the Internet Archive.
